ONE Change Charrette

2005

Partners: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, ONE Change Community Development

Poverty, high unemployment, absentee landlords, substandard housing and local drug abuse are all issues that Saint John, New Brunswick’s Old North End struggles with. In 2005 residents decided it was time for change. They came together to question the existing situation and challenge their place within the conflicting paths of local, regional, provincial, national and global forces.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the ONE Change Committee contracted Cities & Environment Unit to help facilitate a charrette focusing on housing. Over several days community members including young and old, seasoned residents and new arrivals, agencies, service providers and local leaders found common ground. Through focused thinking, intense discussion, debate and collaboration a vision for their neighbourhood was created.

The Old North End Community Action Plan is a physical record of the event. It represents the remarkable qualities, shared ambitions and collective passions of the community while making visible the work that remains to be done.
